By young composers from Robert Burns Academy.

This concert is the culmination of a composition project for Higher and Advanced Higher Music students at the Robert Burns Academy, led by Sir James MacMillan and Gillian Walker.

The students will submit these short works as part of their portfolio submissions to the Scottish Qualifications Authority. The Cumnock Tryst has a commitment to help music teachers in Scotland deliver this part of the curriculum. Based on photographs of the local area taken by celebrated photographer and musician Simon Butterworth, the young composers have responded to this extra-musical stimulus which has helped them think creatively. The photographs became the starting point of their own compositions. Simon’s series is called Abstract Excavationism: The Art of Industrial Land Reclamation.

Runtime: 60 mins, no interval.

“I have had a lifelong commitment to mentoring young composers from primary schools through to post-graduate level and beyond. The Cumnock Tryst is dedicated to commissioning and encouraging up-and-coming composers. Through The Tryst we continue our work in secondary schools, bringing some great musicians in to work with teenagers. Composition is very much part of the music curriculum in Scotland and I am committed to helping teachers deliver this part of the course. We are delighted to roll out our most recent project in Robert Burns Academy.”
