Midnight Jungle

by Dianne McConnell

“Ladies and Gentlemen, Theys and Thems. Get ready, the performance is about to begin.”

Midnight Jungle is a dance performance that investigates the coexistence of messy and polished within queer identities as they take their place on stage. Beginning from the societal questioning of queer expression, the piece combines vogue, commercial dance and persona; deconstructing them to explore through embodied sensation the joy that inspires movement and brings empowerment to individual voices. Instead of answering the imposed questions, the performer chooses to let them linger with the audience, inviting them to question how the dismissal of expectation can free the individual from oppression.
