Timmy Allan named BBC Radio Scotland Young Jazz Musician 2024
Jazz student Timmy Allan has been named BBC Radio Scotland’s Young Jazz Musician 2024.
Guitarist Timmy, who is in fourth year, clinched the title at the BBC’s headquarters at Pacific Quay.
Timmy performed his own composition Hush and an arrangement of Tea for Two in the final, where he was joined by RCS graduate and double bassist Laure Moore and singer Sam Hancock.
Jazz alumnus and pianist Fergus McCreadie chaired the judging panel alongside alumna Corrina Hewat, harpist, singer and composer and jazz vocalist Niki King.
As well as taking home the trophy, Timmy also receives a recording session and appearance on the station’s Afternoon Show, a performance at next year’s competition and a concert appearance organised by the Glasgow Jazz Festival or an equivalent prize.
Timmy began playing guitar at church at the age of nine with his siblings and parents, which helped cultivate his love for gospel and folk/Americana music. He then delved into metal and later jazz music.
Timmy won the 2022 Phil Miller guitar prize in Birmingham and is establishing himself in the Scottish jazz scene, playing regularly in Glasgow and Edinburgh with the likes of Brian Kellock, Kevin Mackenzie, Paul Harrison, Alyn Cosker and Matt Carmichael.
