Acting Through Song
Short Study – Weekend Course
Page Navigation
Overview
This 2 day course is for people age 16+ who wish to develop their acting and singing skills.
When an actor sings it can take you somewhere emotionally that spoken text sometimes cannot. Acting through Song combines storytelling with a vocal technique that allows us to take the audience to that place. Delivered by Marjory Watson, lecturer from the BA Musical Theatre programme this short course will explore how actors can communicate with integrity, emotion, and a sense of character. Students will learn vital vocal techniques that will allow you to do that with ease.
By the end of this course you will have:
- taken part in a daily technical vocal warm-up
- learned about vital vocal techniques and explored key vocal qualities
- put into practise combining acting and vocal techniques on a song of your choice
- a greater understanding on how to approach your own performance with integrity and confidence.

Each session will begin with a technical vocal warm –up to prepare you for the work ahead.
You will be introduced to vocal techniques and voice qualities, and have the opportunity to learn and try them for yourself. You will also learn the terminology and vocabulary that goes with the vocal techniques. As we progress through the weekend you will build upon what you’ve already learned, deepen your understanding of your own vocal technique and learn how to integrate the work into our own performance.
Through exercises and tasks, you will explore the world of the song, looking for clues in both lyrics and music that will help you unlock a truthful and powerful performance.
You will look at how you can make the song your own, and offer your own original interpretation of it.
You will work individually in front of the class on a Musical Theatre song of your choice. During this you will receive feedback and guidance from your tutor.
The weekend will end in a sharing of a song you have worked on throughout the week to your fellow students and time to reflect and set goals for yourself moving forward.
There are no entry requirements for this open access course. Students do not need to have previous experience. Students should show up to class eager to learn and take part.
