Ruth Slater

Ruth delivers lectures and practical seminars on Historically Informed Performance Practice. A chapter Ruth jointly wrote with two RCS colleagues on Recontextualised Learning through Embedded Creativity: Developing a Module that applies HIPP (historically informed performance practice) to Baroque Music, was published in a book for Routledge, Creative Teaching for Creative Learning In Higher Music Education in 2016. Ruth also lectures on the Teaching Musician and Integrated Music Studies modules at the RCS, as well as working on the Masters Programme.

 She is a diploma examiner for ABRSM both in the UK and the Far East. The RCS have appointed Ruth to coordinate their programme for students taking the DipABRSM and LRSM teaching diplomas and to deliver specialist seminars to those students. 

As a performer Ruth freelances widely, regularly directing both period and modern performances from the violin. She frequently performs and records with groups such as the Gabrieli Consort and Players and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. Ruth has worked extensively with many other ensembles including Amsterdam Baroque, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Academy of Ancient Music, Early Opera Company, Brandenburg Consort, Dunedin Consort and the Hanover Band, often playing guest principal. 

As a soloist, Ruth has appeared with many leading period instrument ensembles such as Florilegium, Hanover Band, London Handel Orchestra and Ludus Baroque, both in the UK and as far afield as Australia. She has also spent much time performing and studying Scottish and Shetland traditional music.
