Professor Dorothy Miell

Professor Dorothy Miell is Chair of the Board of Governors for the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
Dorothy is an experienced Higher Education (HE) practitioner and leader with extensive experience of designing, quality assuring, teaching and examining at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Her personal research record is focussed on psychological perspectives on the creative and performing arts.
Dorothy retired from being Vice Principal and Head of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Edinburgh, where she is Professor Emerita. She previously held senior roles at the Open University. She has been engaged with national and international organisations working on professional accreditation and academic standards, as well as education and policy development in the creative arts.
Dorothy has governance experience as a Trustee/Board member. She is currently Vice Chair of the Board at Scottish Opera and co-Chair of the New Rotterdam Wharf project, and is a Trustee of the IMPACT charity, designing a new concert hall for Edinburgh. She has also served as a Trustee and President of the British Psychological Society, as an elected member of the Open University’s Governing Council and until June 2019 was a member of the Edinburgh International Festival Board
Dorothy has expertise from her professional academic experience and management responsibilities across the HE sector in terms of all aspects of teaching, research, staff and student development and support, as well as of HE financing and policy frameworks, ethical, equality and diversity issues, international markets, reputational management, estate developments and philanthropic opportunities.
