Graeme Brown
Graeme became a freelance bassoonist in his second year at the RCS, working with orchestras throughout the UK, Ireland and France. In 2015, Graeme was appointed Bassoon Principal No. 2 with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. In this varied role, he can be found rehearsing, performing, delivering educational workshops and recording. The BBCSSO continues to deliver one of the most diverse offerings to an audience; and to that end, Graeme has also featured on the Ocarina, Harmonica and Heckelphone in recent concerts!
Graeme Brown grew up in the distillery village of Windygates, Fife and began learning the bassoon through local authority lessons. He soon progressed to the Junior Department, of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, to study with Janet Bloxwich. He continued his studies at the RCS in both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes with David Hubbard and Peter Whelan.
In addition to this role, Graeme continues to perform with other orchestras throughout the UK. He has appeared as a guest player with The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, The Orchestra of The Royal Opera House, The BBC Philharmonic, The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Opera North and The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.
Graeme is a tutor at both the RCS junior and senior departments, and at Dollar Academy. He has coached the bassoons for the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland and has, in the past, appeared as a guest artist and delivered masterclasses at the RCS.
Graeme lives in the Village of Harthill and enjoys the walking, running and cycling opportunities available to him in the surrounding countryside.
