David Hubbard
Principal Bassoon, RSNO.
David Hubbard is a lecturer of bassoon at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, and the bassoon tutor at the Music School of Douglas Academy. He regularly coaches the bassoon section of the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland. He has been invited on several occasions to give masterclasses at Wells Cathedral School and Chethams School of Music, and is an examiner for the Royal Northern College of Music.
David grew up in Wiltshire and went on to study music at the Royal College of Music in London, graduating in the summer of 1990.
Subsequently, he lived and worked in Spain for 12 years, initially with the Orquesta Philarmónica de Malaga, and later, the Real Orquesta Sinfonica de Sevilla.
David took up the position of Principal Bassoon of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra in July 2004. He has performed as a soloist with the RSNO on several occasions playing the Mozart Bassoon Concerto, the Vivaldi E Minor, and F Minor concertos, Michael Daugherty’s work, ‘Dead Elvis’,Elgar Romance and Weber’s Andante and Hungarian Rondo.
Most recently, in July 2022, he performed the Mozart Bassoon Concerto with Amicus Orchestra
In April 2011 David premiered a new concerto for bassoon called ‘That Blessed Wood’ written for him by Rory Boyle and commissioned by Camerata Scotland (a recording of which is available on iTunes). A recording of the middle section of the work entitled ‘Intermezzo’ with the pianist Scott Mitchell, is available as part of a collection of works by Rory Boyle on the CD ‘A Box of Chatter’.
He has also recorded Der alte Brummbär (The Old Grumbler) op.210 with the RSNO on the album ‘A Festival of Fucik’ with Neemi Jarvi for Chandos.
David has guested as principal bassoon with many of the British orchestras such as the London Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonia, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Halle, BBC Philharmonic, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, BBC Scottish Symphony, and Scottish Chamber Orchestra.
David has recently had an arrangement written for bassoon and piano accepted for publication by Emerson Edition Limited. The arrangement is taken from Melodrame No.4 from the Incidental Music for Shakespeare’s Hamlet op.57a by P. Tchaikovsky.
In what little free time remains, David enjoys cycling and DIY.
